Participate & have a say in LSM’s future. \nLesbian Sex Mafia Members-Only Gender Policy Workshop \nWhere: In-person at the LGBT Center at 208 W 13th St. \nWhen: Sunday\, October 27; doors open at 1:30\, workshop begins at 2 \nThis workshop is for full LSM members in good standing. In order to be a member in good standing you must have paid member dues for 2024 and attended an LSM membership orientation at some point in the past. Reach out to lesbiansexmafia@gmail.com if you need to confirm your membership. \nThe LSM board has been researching and fielding facilitator proposals over the past year\, and we’re excited to invite our members to participate in a Gender Policy Workshop. The workshop is a structured\, interactive session hosted by an experienced facilitator designed to actively engage the community in exploring\, discussing\, and understanding the current gender policy as well as potential updates. It emphasizes group discussions\, collaborative activities\, and problem-solving exercises. \nThis workshop is not intended to create or vote on a new gender policy. Instead\, it will serve as a space for exploration and discussion\, allowing members to reflect on and consider what gender policy would best serve the collective LSM community. No decisions will be made during the session\, ensuring the focus remains on open dialogue and shared understanding. \nAll full LSM members are invited to attend. If you can’t make it in person\, you have the option to submit your thoughts in writing to be posted and available for viewing during the workshop. Further instructions on doing so will be included in an email to the membership. \nAfter the in-person workshop\, we will invite members to put forward their proposals for what the new LSM gender policy should be. Then\, we’ll have an online vote on choosing and adopting one of those member proposals as an amendment to our bylaws. \nWe look forward to your participation and input in shaping the future of our community. \nPlease RSVP if you plan to attend so you can receive email updates and we can accurately plan (and cater!) for our headcount. \nCOVID-19 Test Requirement: \nWe are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases. Because of this\, we are asking that all attendees for this workshop either take a COVID test within the 12 hours before door entry (at-home/rapid tests are fine) and show us photographic proof of a negative test result\, OR wear a mask. Since then\, the language and broader conversation around gender identity have evolved significantly\, and we’ve received consistent feedback from our membership that we should change our gender policy. This workshop is a chance for our members to come together and discuss the changes they want to see. \nWill the membership be voting on a new gender policy during this workshop? \nNo\, voting on a new policy will NOT take place during this workshop. This workshop is for the membership to meet\, share their thoughts on the gender policy\, and discuss possible changes. Voting will occur online after the workshop. \nWhat if I’m a member who can’t be there in person? \nThis workshop is in-person only. However\, you will have the option to submit your thoughts in writing to be posted and available for viewing during the workshop. Also\, you will still be able to submit a proposal for the new gender policy language and cast a vote to select the new gender policy\, regardless of if you attend the workshop. \nWhat will the gender policy amendment process look like? \nThis workshop is the first of 3 steps the board and membership are taking to amend the gender policy. In this workshop\, Oran Julius will review ways to engage in risk-aware consensual kink practices around bagging and other forms of breath play\, before demonstrating a variety of techniques. Following the demo\, there will be a Q&A as well as time for participants to practice under Oran’s supervision. \nPlease note: All forms of kink are inherently risky– breath play especially carries significant medical risks that can be managed\, but never completely eliminated. We believe education is important so participants can make informed\, risk-aware decisions. \nPresenter Bio: \nOran Julius (they/he) is a femmeboy himbo\, multitasking maven\, and creative dreamer. In this class\, participants will learn how to use the threat of fear and fantasy to engage in interrogation play. An interrogation scene is a form of BDSM roleplay in which participants act out the roles of torturer and victim. SUMMARY:LSM Presents: How We Knew New York - LSM History by Mama Vi
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1981 by Dorothy Allison and Jo Arnone\, the Lesbian Sex Mafia is the oldest continuously running women’s BDSM support and education group! It was also the year that a “rare cancer” was first seen in a group of gay men in New York City that became the widespread epidemic we know today as the AIDS crisis. Mama Vi\, a long-time member of LSM\, joins us this February with historical photos and stories regarding the leatherwomen history of NYC\, starting with the social and political events that ignited the founding of the Lesbian Sex Mafia. \nThe photos\, acquired by Mama Vi\, are from Efrain Gonzalez\, a historic Brooklyn-based photographer known for capturing the seedy histories of New York City’s queers and fetishists from the 70s\, 80s\, and 90s. \nBio:\nViola Johnson is a leatherwoman\, activist\, motivational speaker\, and author who has been active in the leather BDSM scene for well over four decades. Vi has served as a mentor to countless individuals and was dubbed “Mama Vi” by several generations of Leathermen and women. She is delighted to now be Great Grandmom to a whole new generation of “kinklings.” \nAs the Owner of the Carter/Johnson Library and Collection\, a compilation of over 15\,000 books\, periodicals\, posters\, newsletters\, art\, and more\, Vi passionately persevers our leather history. Her history includes being a proud member of the ONYX Pearls Mid-Atlantic chapter and one of Onyx’s seven original Pearls\, a “Lifetime Member of ONYX” and a charter member of Tulsa Uniform Leather Seekers Association (T.U.L.S.A.)\, the Lesbian Sex Mafia (LSM). Vi speaks at numerous academic institutions\, including Bryn Mawr and Barnard Colleges\, Orange Coast College\, Oklahoma State University\, and Kean College.
