LSM has a new monthly social activity, called LSM: Out and About. This is an opportunity to get together and have fun outside of our workshops and bar nights. This month, join LSM for a night at the movies! As part of the film series Punks, Poets & Valley Girls: Women Filmmakers in 1980s America, BAM is screening the classic lesbian film Desert Hearts (1985).
Director Donna Deitch had to resort to selling her house to raise money for this ravishing landmark of queer cinema, which draws from Douglas Sirk and foreshadows Todd Haynes’ Carol. In 1950s Nevada, repressed New York literature professor Vivian travels to Reno looking for a quickie divorce and finds lusty, dusty romance with a free-spirited young woman, giving mainstream audiences their first taste of tender, non-sensationalized lesbian romance. – BAM synopsis
